Project Description:

The Neutron Facilities Development Division (NFDD) at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a position as Neutron
Scattering Instrument Development Associate in the Instrument
Development Group. The successful candidate will be tasked with
developing and implementing a robust portable MISANS component that can
be deployed on various neutron scattering instrument beamlines to
provide new capability. Modulated-intensity small angle neutron
scattering, or MISANS, instrument uses the modulated intensity with zero
effort (MIEZE) technique, a variant of the neutron resonance spin-echo.
The adaptation of this method to a small angle neutron scattering
provides the possibility of studying slow dynamics with energy changes
in the neV-range. The advantage of the MIEZE technique over other
spin-echo techniques is that all of the polarizing neutron optics can be
installed upstream of the sample, so that in principle the signal is not
subject to depolarization at the sample position.

The NFDD is responsible for developing neutron scattering instruments
located at both the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux
Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Research at the facilities encompasses the
physical, chemical, biological, medical and materials sciences.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

* Works with and provides technical guidance to Instrument Scientists in
the proper use of the beamline components developed.

* Serves as the technical specialist for the operation and maintenance
of sophisticated equipment used for neutron scattering.

* Plans and leads in the testing and evaluation of new or developmental
equipment.

* Ensures that beam line operations are performed under safe and
environmentally sound conditions.

* Proposes, develops, and presents procedures for operating and
maintaining beamline equipment.

* May give work direction to technicians, craft workers, and less
experienced personnel.

Qualifications:

A PhD degree in a physical science, engineering or related field is
required. Good communications and interpersonal skills is required.
Ability to work in a team environment is required. Demonstrated computer
literacy including proficiency in word processing required. Direct
experience working on neutron scattering related instruments or radio
frequency devices is highly desirable. The applicant must be capable of
working with scientists and engineers from verbal or written
instructions. Periods of moderate travel and off-normal work hours will
be required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more
than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all
degree requirements before starting their appointment. Applications will
