AVAILABLE NOW: PhD STUDENTSHIP, FUNDED FOR 3.5 YEARS BY EPSRC (UK):

A Small-Angle Scattering Study of the Self-Assembly of Amyloid Peptide Fragments and Copolymers

This is an exciting opportunity to investigate the self-assembly of peptide fragments and copolymers using the UK's new synchrotron scattering facility, Diamond Light Source. Prof Hamley's group are investigating fibrillar nanostructures formed by amyloid peptides, implicated in protein misfolding diseases, in particular Alzheimer's. This is a major project funded by several current EPSRC grants. The PhD studentship project is funded by the EPSRC "Next Generation Facility Users" initiative. The research will involve the use of small-angle x-ray scattering and synchrotron circular dichroism at Diamond Light Source and small-angle neutron scattering at ISIS, both facilities being located at Harwell close to Reading. The project will also provide opportunities for cutting edge research at other international x-ray and neutron scattering facilities and lab-based instruments including a state-of-the-art small-angle x-ray scattering instrument at Reading.

Funding Notes
The stipend for 2010/11 is £13,590, tuition fees are not payable. A stipend will be paid at a similar level for 3½ years from commencement of study, subject to confirmation of registration at the end of the first year.

The studentship is available from January 2011 and is open to UK or European Union students only. This is due to restrictions imposed by the funding body.
