You will join the recently created Molecular Biophysics Group (www.biophysics.liv.ac.uk). You should have a PhD in the area of physics, chemistry or biophysics, an interest in method development would be advantageous.

Post 1: De Novo Phasing using long X-ray wavelengths.

There is increasing use of single wavelength anomalous dispersion methods for de novo protein structure solution using long wavelengths. In particular the method is suited for exploiting the presence of intrinsic anomalous scattering from sulphur atoms belonging to cysteine and methionine residues that are present in nearly all proteins. You should have experience in protein crystallography. The post is available for a year in the first instance. Job Ref: R-568340

Post 2: Gas Phase Scattering of Macromolecules.

This EU funded project involves the exploitation and development of a working prototype of an ion trap mass spectrometer that permits the simultaneous x-ray scattering of trapped charged particles to be measured. This set-up will allow novel insights into shapes and conformations of biological macromolecules and assemblies in the gas phase. The long term aim of this project is to explore the use of X-ray free electron laser, the first of which, LCLS (www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls), is anticipated to start operation in 2009/2010. You should have experience in X-ray scattering or mass spectrometry. The post is available for a year in the first instance.. Job Ref: R-568349

Closing date for both posts: 17 October 2008
