Postdoctoral Research Associate in Large-Scale Structures

Date: Aug 21, 2020

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 3976

Overview

The Large Scale Structures group in the Neutron Scattering Division is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to contribute to the next generation biological small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument that is proposed for Second Target Station (STS) at the Spallation Neutron Source. In this position, you will join a diverse team of scientists with expertise in neutron scattering instrumentation, computational modeling, and structural biology. You will contribute to the scientific activities of the team to study biological and environmental systems such as biopolymers, biomembranes and other relevant biomaterials. In addition, an important component of your work will be to develop in situ and in operando measurement approaches that will allow simultaneous data acquisition and analysis of SANS and other measurement modalities such as light scattering and optical spectroscopy. This is a unique opportunity to build your scientific profile in a collaborative setting as well as gaining practical experience in the scientific and instrumentation development of the next generation of neutron scattering techniques for the STS project.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

In this position, you will;

  * Perform scientific research using small-angle scattering techniques
  * Develop new approaches for in situ and operando measurements on a SANS beam line
  * Actively participate in the research activities of the team and provide support to visiting researchers
  *   Publish scientific papers
  * Present scientific results at appropriate national and international conferences
  * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  * Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications

  * A Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, structural biology, bioengineering, materials science or a related discipline
  * Expertise in small-angle X-ray and/or neutron scattering, including data collection and data analysis
  * Experience in biophysical characterization techniques using optical spectroscopy, light scattering, X-rays or other relevant techniques
  * Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment
  * A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Previous experience in development of scientific instrumentation
  * Proficiency with modern programming environments such as Python, MatLAB and other scripting languages.
  * The candidate should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication, and presentational skills, and should have demonstrated the ability to interact effectively with research staff at all levels and to work within a multi-disciplinary team

Other Information:

  * Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months
  * Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding
  * Provide a current curriculum vitae including a list of publications when applying for this position
  * If you are selected for interview, you will be required to send in a minimum of two letters of reference

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation.
