Dear Small-Angle Scatterers,

Here is an announcement for a postdoctoral position at Synchrotron Soleil.

Best regards,

Javier Pérez

The deadline for submission is September, 30th, 2016.

SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and a research laboratory, whose mission is to run research programs using synchrotron radiation, to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make those available to the scientific community. SOLEIL, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., is used by over 5 000 researchers coming from France and abroad. It is based on a state-of-the-art synchrotron source, both in terms of brilliance and stability. The facility is a "public" company employing about 500 people, founded by the CNRS and the CEA, and partner of the Paris-Saclay University.

The SWING beamline, using radiation from an in-vacuum U20 undulator installed in a short straight section, is dedicated to Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). It operates in the energy range 5-16 keV. The beamline was designed to reach extremely small Q values (e.g. 5.10-3 nm-1). Optimal data collection conditions for proteins are provided by a unique and dedicated on-line purification (SEC-HPLC) system.

1. Missions

In the past years, the BioSAXS group at Soleil has developed new concepts to study membrane proteins structures in detergent solutions and their interactions with soluble partners using SEC-SAXS. We are now seeking a highly motivated scientist with a background in structural biology and strong skills in programming. The main project of the accepted candidate will focus on the structural characterization of membrane proteins using SAXS. (S)he will be involved in several ongoing collaborative projects with French and international partners in this area. On the methodological side, (s)he will contribute to improve our dedicated software tools : Memprot, a program recently released to model the detergent corona within the protein/detergent complex, and Dadimodo, our domain docking program. As a member of the SWING beamline team, (s)he will also contribute to the beamline operation.

2. Qualifications and Experience

The candidate should hold a PhD. related to physics or structural biology, and experience in X-ray scattering. Expertise in scattering methods applied to biology will be much appreciated. Good communication skills in English are mandatory.

3. General conditions

The offer concerns a Post-doctoral contract for a two year-period. The place of work will be at Synchrotron SOLEIL (Saint-Aubin, 91, France). This position is open to people with disabilities.

Applications should include a motivation letter and Curriculum Vitae with the addresses of two referees, and should be registered directly on the SOLEIL internet web site: http://candidature.synchrotron-soleil.fr/YourApplication/Candidatures.php?ref=Postdoc-SWING
