Solution Scattering from Biological Macromolecules

EMBO Practical Course, 17-24 October 2016, Hamburg, Germany
Organizers: Dmitri Svergun and Al Kikhney
http://events.embo.org/16-sas/

The course is aimed at young scientists working in the field of
structural biology including biochemists, biophysicists, and those
specializing in macromolecular crystallography (MX), electron microscopy
(EM), NMR or bioinformatics. Small angle scattering (SAS) of X-rays and
neutrons (SAXS/SANS) allows one to study native particles and complexes
and to monitor structural changes in response to variations in external
conditions (temperature, pH, salinity, ligands). The method provides low
resolution macromolecular shapes ab initio and is readily combined with
other structural, biochemical and computational techniques in hybrid
approaches.

The course participants will have the possibility to learn the basics of
SAS, sample preparation, experiment design, data interpretation and will
get hands-on experience with the latest modelling programs. The
participants are encouraged to bring their own samples to perform
synchrotron solution scattering experiments on-site, the results will be
used for practical tutorials and discussed on the last day of the course.

26 participants will be selected to attend the course. The registration
fee of 50 euro will be requested from the accepted academic participants
covering the event materials, lodging and meals. Applicants from
industry are expected to pay a 1000 euro fee.

Application deadline: July 31st 2016.
