Postdoctoral Research Associate in Ames Laboratory

X-ray and neutron scattering from soft condensed matter

A postdoctoral research position in X-ray and neutron scattering from
soft condensed matter is now available at Ames Laboratory, at Iowa State
University in Ames, Iowa. The research is focused on the structure of
bio-inspired materials, such as those obtained by bio-mineralization.
The scattering group is part of an interdisciplinary effort to unravel
the mechanism by which bio-inspired functionalized templates
(lipid-membrane, proteins, bio-polymers, etc..) induce crystal growth
and morphology from salt solutions. The scattering studies involve
structural determinations of the final products and in-situ growth
intermediates. In the past, the scattering group has been involved in
studying ion-distributions at charged interfaces, interfacial and bulk
structure of ionic liquids, polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems,
protein-lipid interactions and other topics in soft condensed matter
physics. The postdoc will employ surface sensitive synchrotron X-ray and
neutron scattering (reflectivity, GIXD, SANS, and SAXS, WAXD) and
spectroscopic techniques.

Interested applicants should have a PhD degree in physics, or related
area with some experience in scattering techniques. Applicants should
send their applications, including two letters of recommendations, by
e-mail to Dr. David Vaknin at vaknin at ameslab.gov.
