The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world,
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific
instruments. The Institute welcomes 1700 visiting scientists per year to
carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography,
soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded
primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United
Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements
with 11 other European countries. The Science Division is currently
looking for the:

Head of the Large Scale Structures Group (m/f)

As a member of the Science Division, which is organised into five broad
instrument groups, the Head of the Large Scale Structures (LSS) Group
occupies a key position at the ILL. The Head of the LSS Group is in
charge of a team of 16 scientists and 7 technicians, who operate 6
instruments for conducting experiments in small-angle scattering,
reflectometry and crystallography of systems with large unit cells, and
also run the chemistry and biology laboratories. In addition, the Group
currently hosts 14 PhD students. Further information can be found at the

ILL is currently in the midst of an ambitious programme of instrument
renewal, much of which draws on world-leading in-house technical
expertise. The LSS Group has benefited greatly from this initiative,
with 1 new and 1 refurbished instrument becoming available to our users
this year, and at least two more instruments anticipated over the next
three years. The range of science served by the LSS instruments is
particularly broad, spanning solid-state physics, and in particular
magnetism and superconductivity, through chemistry and soft-condensed
matter to biological systems. This scientific profile makes the Group
particularly suitable to manage the ILL chemistry laboratories, as well
as the Biological Deuteration Facility within the Partnership for
Structural Biology, via dedicated LSS staff members.

The highly motivated Group Leader will:
- Promote the use of large scale structure instruments in all fields of
science 
- Anticipate and propose technical developments for such instruments 
- Liaise with other instrument groups at ILL and at other neutron
sources 
- Ensure that both the instruments and the laboratories are organised in
an optimal manner to carry out the User Programme 
- Have an active personal research programme 
- Encourage in-house research within the LSS Group 
- Supervise the scientific and technical work in the LSS Group 
- Work with ILL Management to develop and implement strategy.

The successful candidate must have an international reputation in an
area of science that reflects the strengths of the instrument suite and
complements existing activity in the Group. He/she should be experienced
in methods of scattering from large scale structures (small-angle
scattering, reflectometry, diffraction) and neutron experimental
techniques and, ideally, other scientific domains. He/she must have the
ability to lead and motivate the group members, and have some experience
in budget and project management.
