The Macromolecular and Microstructure Sciences team at the NIST Center for Neutron
Research (NCNR) in Gaithersburg, MD, is seeking candidates for a small angle scattering
Instrument Scientist position. The team is responsible for operating two 30-m SANS
instruments and one USANS instrument which combined span four orders of magnitude in Q-
space corresponding to structural features in materials ranging from 1 nm to 20,000 nm.
The position will allow the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to develop a
strong scientific program taking advantage of this world class instrumentation within the
context of a major national laboratory.

The position requires a Ph.D. in a materials science related field and excellent
experimental, communication, and interpersonal skills. Experience in microstructure or
macromolecular structure characterization using x-ray or neutron techniques is highly
desirable. Strong programming skills are also a plus. Responsibilities include helping
visiting researchers in conducting experiments, participating in instrument maintenance
and development activities, and developing an independent research program. Appointment
will initially be for two years with the possibility of extension for up to two
additional years. Salary is in the range from $56,000 to $66,000 depending on
qualifications and experience. Expressions of interest along with a resume should be
sent (preferably electronically) to:
