PhD Studentship:
X-ray and Neutron Scattering from Soft Materials under Flow

To start:
January 2007

Deadline for applications:
November 15 2006

Department of Chemistry, University of Reading; ISIS and Diamond Light Source, Rutherford Appleton Lab

The influence of flow on a wide range of soft materials will be probed by in-situ small-angle scattering coupled with simultaneous rheological measurements. The flow-induced alignment of peptide fibrils, wormlike micelles and thermotropic liquid crystals are among the systems to be investigated. The diversity of self-assembled and nanostructured materials and the unique combination of apparatus and facilities available within the three institutions make this a very exciting studentship. The student will be under the supervision of Prof Ian Hamley at the University of Reading but will be expected to spend half their time at ISIS and Diamond (both at the Rutherford Appleton Lab close to Reading) working with Dr Stephen King and Dr Nick Terrill. The project is supported by the CCLRC Centre for Molecular Structure and Dynamics.

The studentship is available to UK/EU applicants with a UK upper second class honours degree in Chemistry or a related subject, or a Masters degree or equivalent and will cover payment of fees and a full maintenance allowance (£12,300 for 2006/7). Application forms are available by post or email from:
